Every monastery, apart from constituting a complete set that contains in its design the finest of mathematics and geometry, is also that metaphorical container of oil, whose aromas, even after centuries, intoxicate the senses with effluvia of mystery and perfection.
Obviously, the Soria monastery of Santa María de Huerta, is one of them. And its history, at least in relation to its genesis or principle, released the cap of the container of oil that contains it, is markedly mysterious. So mysterious, that one would have to go back to those dark years of the 11th and 12th centuries, when Cluny's opulent sovereignty came out - I would not dare to say that unexpectedly, since there were still many sheep outside the sheepfold - a painful and Annoying stye called Cyster.
To speak of the Císter obliges, in a certain way, to speak also of what has always been considered its armed faction: the order of the Temple. And in doing so, one can not avoid comparing the historical parallels that link both orders not only in their development, but also in their beginnings, since both seem to detect a similar phenomenon, perhaps copied from those missionaries and navigators who were the Irish monks , because like them, both Cistercians and Templars began their adventurous life in small groups, which does not stop being, in the end, a tremendously paradoxical question, because it is hard to think that from such modest beginnings, they could arise, even with greater or less degree of conservation, works so perfect and incommensurable.
So, it can be said that this monastery began, thanks to the work of a handful of men, who submitted by an endless number of privations but with faith, perseverance and knowledge surprising for their time, raised something worthy of respect and admiration . Although, undergoing numerous renovations that were adapting to the predominant taste of certain times, still retains an interesting part of its primitive factory.
To her they belong, without doubt, a careful and enigmatic range of stonemasonry brands that, together, constitute an exciting enigma. Or places no less enigmatic and little known by the general public, such as the Magdalena Chapel. Or relevant characters of History -the archbishop of Toledo, Rodrigo Ximénez de Rada or Martín de Hinojosa-, as well as
fascinating artistic enigmas related to no less important episodes of that Reconquista.
Such as the famous battle of the Three Kings, better known as the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, which is an attractive and exciting journey to the mystery worth discovering.
And that is, after all, the slope that we will see throughout the next entries.
