How to draw THE HULK! This is very satisfying

in art •  7 years ago  (edited)

I used to give kids and some interested adults a chance to draw cartoons of different levels of difficulty. Sometimes they were simple images like a puppy or a clown. Aspiring young artists seemed to love super-heroes especially.

Obviously they will be more complex but were enjoyed greatly using the following method. More accomplished artists could draw the provided sample or make their own. Some could simply color the image only...a sort of "adult" color book, if you will.

The header image is here as a teaser - the main image follows at the end.

Marvel Comic's "The Hulk" has always been a favorite of mine. His "over-the top" physique is such fun to draw because it is so exaggerated.

How I would go about this would be to find a reference image and draw a rough of how the character needs to be portrayed and, over several sketches, come up with something like this:

Next I break it down to the basic framework using shapes to show where the muscles would go and this is printed out on a sheet of paper, obviously dimmed somewhat so that its simply a reference to the artist to practice on:

The idea would now be for me to provide the sample image for the artists to replicate on the guides or, if wanted, to draw their own version. I often used light pencil guides and then the artist would "ink" on top of that, something like this:

This is the inked version I would provide as a guide that could be copied of simply colored if needed:

Line-work Idea:

Color Reference:

Above is a suggested color guide, but feel free to use anything you wish!   I did these  with "vectors" (solid shapes instead of gradient tones) in Adobe Illustrator.

Faded framework image:

Print these out and have fun drawing. Why not give it a try!!
I will post a simpler image next for children to draw. Thanks for visiting!
