Vættir

Evening drawing made from an old sketch.

Scandinavia has like everywhere else a rich folklore with some creatures like trolls making it to the collective conscience of modern fantasy. The Vættir is a not so well known creature - the name originates from the old Norse mythology and seems to be used as a collective name for spirits of a wide variety. This Vættir (or Vætte in my own langauge) originates from the woods from where it watches the humans with not too impressed eyes.

When I think of Scandinavia, I think of snow. And so I have to figure that this Vættir is rather cold...

In the summertime we have temperatures above 20℃/68℉ in southern Norway, Sweden and Denmark, so everybody runs around naked. The climate in western Scandinavia is rather mild due to the Golf Stream and all the water around us, but I know that central Europeans find it both cold and wet. Most people are also like the Vætte in the picture used to the cold, that is except my wife who freezes all year.

You aren't necessarily supposed to know about the weather on the other side of the globe.

Here is one of Copenhagen's famous bicycle-girls in the summer with a small hipster in the backseat.

I know this might be a really dumb question but do you do these drawings with a mouse or do you draw them by hand on a touch-screen? I've always wondered how the animators for cartoon movies did to draw these kinds of drawings.

Really nice drawing Btw, really love the details... I can barely draw a stick figure. My recent post has an example of my "drawing" on paint XD

I love it and I love the mythology behind it. I took some courses on celtic and nordic mythology whilst at uni and it was all very interesting. I have to say, sometimes I too "Watch humans with not too impressed eyes" :)

I am glad you like it. Much of the Norse mythology is common knowledge here of course, but I have studied it too and made quite a few digital drawings and painting inspired by it. The vættir is in the folklore close to the Nisse only that it look after the wild land, while the Nisse is guarding the house and the farmland.
