# 3D Painting on a 3x4ft Canvas
Hi everyone! Today i will show a work of mine while discussing illusion of depth to create a 3D painting. Illution of depth is creating an illusion of space in a 2D surface may it be a drawing or a painting. In reality, all realistic or representational art is dependent on creating an illusion. This method is quite tricky so this post might help you in creating one.
on my painting i used mediums that can easily be manipulated. # Materials * Oil paints * Turpentine (rectified/refined) * Linseed oil * Paint brush * 3x4ft Canvas
We will skip the sketching part since i only do rough sketches In this painting i started off painting the background for a reason that it is just a plain green hue. I used Yellow Ochre and Cerulean Blue to make a different kind of green. Then i used Vermilion red for the paint brush and the red circle i painted. Instead of using perspective to create an illusion, I used overlapping. Overlapping is when there is something that is behind from an object that may be blocked from the view. Just like on my painting, a flat surface on the background then a lady then a big hand. Later on there will be shadows to create an illusion that the background is flat and that it would mean that the objects doesnt collide with the background.
Next off I painted the hands. In this part i used Vermilion and Yellow ochre to create a certain kind of orange. By adding white and burnt umber you can manipulate its skin tones of how light or how dark you want it. It would be very wise to mix a lot of vermilion and yellow ochre when painting a very huge one. After painting the background and the paint brush i decided to paint all skin tones. objects that are positioned lower on the picture plane will appear closer than objects that are positioned higher on the picture plane.
I have already covered all skin tones and started off painting other details. Objects that are closer appear more detailed than objects that are further away. Smaller details tend to take some time and requires a lot of patience. On my previous post I said there that in creating details accept that a large detailed painting will never be completed in one day. Plan what to do first and how much per session. Be realistic about how much time the painting will take. This will keep the painting manageable.
A closer look to the details of the painting. As for tiny details like highlights you can use the brushes 0,1,3, or 6. And most importantly take regular breaks from the painting.
When almost done always double check for minor changes. Dont over do painting details so that it wont appear different from the reference. As much as possible follow each and every single detail from the photo you are trying to paint. Take a few steps back from where you are sitting to see if you are doing just right in creating details since looking on a closer distance will just show you brush strokes. And when painting with flat background dont forget to paint shadows at the back of the subject to create a sbetter illusion.
And there it is! My painting titled "August" Why august you may ask. Personally I have been painting indigenous people for quite some time now. And these people never fails to amaze me. Respected and Impressive thats what august is and thats what they are. As an artist it is my personal duty to tell a visual story about them and how important they are. I used my hands as painting reference with a paint brush with it to show that im an artist and I will carry the responsibility of telling the stories these people has to this world who seems to forget where they came from.
Thats all for today folks! Let me know if I need to learn something in painting I would really appreciate it. will be posting more soon 😊
