ART OF THE DAY #01.02.18 John William Waterhouse. “Naiad”

in art •  7 years ago  (edited)

During his life Waterhouse wrote more than two hundred paintings on mythological, historical and literary subjects. Waterhouse shared the pre-Raphaelite interest in the plots borrowed from poetry and mythology. He accurately conveyed the drama of the moment, demonstrated a brilliant mastery of the composition and picturesque technique. However, by his lasting popularity, the artist owes most to the charm of his thoughtful models

Work Waterhouse boasted critics, his reputation was high, and imitated by young artists. It refers to those few artists who, during their lifetime, gained fame and could live in prosperity thanks to their work.

Waterhouse has always protected his privacy from other people's eyes, so we know little about him, except for the most important milestones in the biography. And there was nothing left, except for a few randomly surviving letters, which could clarify the secrets of his life.

"Naiads - deities in Greek mythology, the daughter of Zeus, were nymphs of water sources - rivers, streams and lakes. Naiads were patrons of a certain water object, his soul and incarnation.

Represented naiads in the form of beautiful nude or half-naked girls with flowing hair, with a dress from wreaths and flowers, next to their water sources."
