Hands #8 - Figurative Drawing Study

in art •  7 years ago  (edited)

When I look this drawing of mine, I always think of tired hands after a hard day's work. That doesn't have to be manual labour either. Often when I was working solidly at the computer, my hand, but more so my wrist would ache. A graphic designer friend of mine suffered so badly from RSI that she could not work for a year. That's a disaster when you rely upon your hands for your work.

Thankfully, since I no longer work in web development, these sorts of problems no longer plague me. Painting and drawing is far more relaxing for me, as I am not having to solve other people's problems by a deadline or for a limited budget. I have other things to contend with as an artist, but I much prefer this now, to that of life as a freelance digital bohemian.

There are many things that still are a constant, regardless whether I am working in digital or paint, I am still working for myself, and there are certain tasks and responsibilities that one has to fulfil. But the biggest difference is that the work I now produce as an artist, is what pleases me, rather than as digital developer having to please the client. Rather than building other people's businesses and careers, I am now building my own.

I am very happy with the change I made.

I love working with Charcoal/ line charcoal, and the execution of this drawing is very nice! I'm a graphic designer, and sorry to hear that about your friend. I try to take breaks as often as possible to give my hands a rest, but that is not always possible due to the heavy workload I have sometimes. Great work, and thanks for sharing!

Hi @michael14876! Yes, when you have deadlines and a workload, especially if the project is running behind on time, finding time to take a break can be hard and super stressful. I think many of us start out thinking design, programming or other digital work will be cruisey, but soon find out it is another story.
Cheers.

nice work. keep sharing

There's more to come @erre. I have 70x50cm canvas on the easel at the moment. I should have it finished before the end of the month. I have a few drawings planned in the meantime. ;-)

Beautiful idea and outstanding drawing. Thank you for sharing :-)! @leoplaw

Thank you @tranguyen! Greetings.

Congratulations on your lifestyle change! :) I love your technique. It's always fun to add highlights to dark paper compared to just adding shades to white paper.

Hi @calendula! Thank you. I used to struggle with drawing on white paper. I agree, coloured paper makes drawing much more interesting. =)

wow, great work!

Thank you @silviabeneforti! =)
