Getting lost in the details with painting, is something that is all too easy to do. You ultimately lose sight of the bigger picture.
My aim with this particular painting was to focus on colour and form. Mixing and matching colours is one of the hardest things to do in painting, as our mind gets in the way. We have a tendency to paint or draw what we think we see, not what we actually see.
Eugène Delacroix kicked it all off when he started with the revolutionary technique of mixing complimentary colours into his shadows. His sense of colour later inspired the impressionists who became obsessed with colour. They in turn then figurative painters such as John Singer Sargent.
Colour mixing and matching is an in depth topic that covers more than just the paint, but psychology, illusion and physics.
Great painting. John Singer Sargent is one of my painting influences too :)

Thanks Samuel! I have only recently started to explore Sargent and his works, now that expression and colour have become important to me. I'm also a big fan of contemporaries such Jeremy Lipking and number of others.

Yes I am familiar with Jeremy Lipking. Most of all my influences are 19th century painters.
You might like the art works of Andrew Tischler, he's one of my mates and he helped me loads with my own painting. His website is: andrewtischler.com

Ah yes, I'm familiar with Andrew. I have watched a number of his YouTube videos.
I have a painter friend, Freeman White, who also lives in NZ. He does portraits and landscapes.

"We have a tendency to paint or draw what we think we see, not what we actually see." It was a pleasant surprise to read this because I've used those EXACT words before.

Yep, and it can really take some work to learn to see. But once we do, the world is never the same again. =)
