“Scaffolding” - Pattern Drawing, Step by Step Progress

in art •  9 years ago

Colored Pencil and Pen on Paper (12” x 12”) This drawing was hand drafted using a compass and ruler. The hatch-work is inspired by the endless layers of scaffolding enveloping my apartment in New York City… Here are a couple of images I took recently of both my apartment scaffolding and a building nearby.

Progress images (below) show how I drew the framework in pen and ink and later filled in with colored pencil.

Warmer colors (yellows, reds) push to the foreground, while cooler tones (blues and purples) are set back. Depth starts to take shape here, and helps in highlighting some of the ghosted architectural features hiding behind the diagonals (the door, window etc.)

Finished drawing…!
