TANNING DOROTHEA(1910-2012):
A painter and American woman of letters, she was an important figure in Surrealism, although her artistic career was eclipsed by her husband, painter and sculptor Max Ernst.

Dorothea Margaret Tanning was born on August 25, 1910 in Galesburg, Illinois. After a very short visit by the Chicago Academy of Art, she moved to New York in 1936. She opened a studio there, but rather lived on her fashion illustrations.
