Montague James, Rhodes James, Nevelspoock, original art

in art •  6 years ago

Original paintings, 50x70cm, oils on canvas:

Two portrait in the Nevelspoock-series, a strange family from a long lost era thriving in misty memories. Together with friends, I'm currently producing a video-game based on these portraits, in which you can discover the secrets of this family, follow @nevelspoock for news, art, music and game footage.

Montague and Rhodes are the sons of Hector James and Virginie Philidor. They were born in 1883 and 1885 respectively, in Flanders, Belgium. Their father, Hector got divorced and remarried Cyrilla Nevelspoock later on, so these two are half brothers of Felix Nevelspoock.

They are depicted with the Flanders' World War uniform.

Feel free to comment what comes to mind when seeing these portraits, and thanks for looking!

Some actual background regarding the portraits, apart from the game of Nevelspoock, which I wanted to share here: the portraits are painted from photos of long lost relatives of mine, which I found in my grandmother's archive. I have no information as to who these men were - only that the photos were there together, that they very likely were taken at the same moment, and that these blokes are very likely family (although I don't know how). What strikes me personally most, though, is the fact that the first guy smiles and looks happy, while the other looks like he's scared to death. War, anybody?

I love your style and these are excellent paintings! Your style has a ghostly and eerie feeling in it and in the first one it's even more ghostly. I love it! :)

Thank you, @insaneworks, much appreciated! :)

These have been absolutely gorgeous, @marty-art ! I love that they really capture such personalities in them, like you said, the first one looked pleased with something and the second one looks sad ... Wonderful, wonderful portraits ! And the style in which you've done them in is very moody and fitting for your gothic game :)

Thank you very much @veryspider, I'm glad the personalities shine through in the portraits - that was my aim in the very first place! :)

Love them! They make me think of a rainy day in London and these guys are kind of detectives. Or their ghosts...

Thank you, that's some cool atmosphere you descrive, and actually very close to what we're trying to achieve with the game of Nevelspoock :)

Wonderful portraits!!!! Really impressive and I have to say I love your style in painting :)

Thank you very much, Silvia :)

Thanks for the extra info. Wouldn't those guys be surprised if they had known they would be featured this way?

You're welcome, and yeah, I think about it when I paint these people's portraits - I only hope they would like the idea! :)

They would love it. Your art does them justice!!
