This is the other painting I did on raw wood (acrylic on walnut wood, 18" x 6,") similar to what I wrote about in the first post:

I painted this directly onto the wood, which was black walnut harvested right from the farm that you see in this painting.
The first step was to prime the wood with a gesso (acrylic primer with ground pumice mixed in to give it a little "tooth" to hold the paint. I tinted the gesso the same color as the woodgrain. Then, I sketched out the composition, using the photos the client gave me. The old farmhouse is no longer in existence, but I was given an old black and white photo of it. And finally, I combined that with a recent photo of the barn and made them look like they were in the same time and space.
