New portrait drawing in the making

in art •  7 years ago

Good Saturday to you all,

Tody I am sharing a drawing I have been working on these past few days. It is till not a 100 % done, but I felt like sharing the progress so far.

It's been forever since I drew a portrait in charcoal and lately I have seen so many great examples that I got inspired to draw one myself!

This time have been working on a white paper called Velin Johannot. It is a brand of paper that I have used for etching but never for drawing. The paper has been great for printmaking, thou not so great as I did hope it would be for drawing. At least not with charcoal. I tried to draw in places with pencil and that seemed to be a great deal more agreeable with this paper. The main problem with the paper is that it is too soft and becomes fuzzy when scratched at with the charcoal.

But so far I've had a lot of fun! :)

Here are some photos from the different stages;

I think I will let this drawing rest for a couple of days to look at it with fresh eyes before working at it any further. At this point I know I want to change and improve certain things, I just don't really know how or what, hehe.. Do you ever feel like that?

Besides, it is Saturday after all! Time to enjoy the weekend and let the mind rest a bit.

I hope you are all having a good and creative day!

yes I do! that is why it is good etique to have a break every half an hour or so and do completely different things like making some tea, doing laundry, watching tv,, having a shower, have a good nap, going out have a cappucino, heck! forget about it the whole day or just start another drawing if you don't have nothing else to do

she changes look from down to up wonder if you did on purpose ..

Hi @mayasky,
This is really beautiful!

I liked the eyes the beginning when they were half closed, she looked more natural and the mouth looked a bit more smiley (lazy smile). Then she opened her eyes and discovered the reality of this world which made her look more sad ;)

Nose is different between the 2 faces.

For some reason she changed after she wore the necklace (after you drew more clearly it at least). That is a one of a heck necklace there ;)

Both women look beautiful and well done. Many thanks for sharing your beautiful talent.

Hi @theleapingkoala! :)

Thank you very much for your comment and compliments!

I like your inturpetation of her nature in the different stages of the drawing, hehe.. In the latest stages a few things have changed a bit, yes. Here I actually moved away from the photo I used as a refrence quite a lot. I like to do that sometimes.. :)

Thanks again! :)

Hi @mayasky,
Thank you for your reply and for your kind words.

Here I actually moved away from the photo I used as a refrence quite a lot. I like to do that sometimes.. :)

This only proves how amazingly talented you are (I don't think you need me to tell you that but I can't help myself wanting to say it :D)

I look forward to seeing more of your art work :)

Thank you so very much @petoz! :D

Nice work 👌✏️😊

Thank you very much! :D

lovely art

Thank you @tanmoykumer! :D

Wonderful. I have no words for that. Just showed my sister your great work and she like me was flabbergusted (by the way I like the sound of that word, I don't know why).
Good to take a break sometimes and see the work anew, true. Enjoy the Weekend.

Thank you so very much @johano! :D Flabbergusted is an amazing word! :) Never heard it before, but I will be sure to make use of it now, hehe. Thank you again and a good weekend to you as well.

So nice beautiful :)

Thank you so much @blazing! :)

Nice art! keep it up.

Thank you @nirob! :)

Looks wonderful. Thanks for the closeup on the shading details around the face.

Just my preference, I liked the initial stages where the eyelids were more closed than in the final image. The look fits the pose and feel of the painting. She looks more engaged with the viewer than, final where she seems to be gazing elsewhere.

Excellent work all round.

Thank you very much @leoplaw! :) The eyes have been a tricky one in this drawing. In the original image the model has her eyes more closed, but then I went to fix some details and one thing led to another.. heheh.. I guess that happens sometimes. At this point I actually am a bit sceared of going too much more into the drawing in this area because the paper is getting quite fuzzy.. Ai ai ai... Oh well, Thanks a bunch for your comment! :)

At this point I know I want to change and improve certain things, I just don't really know how or what, hehe.. Do you ever feel like that?

All the time XD And have to keep reminding myself not to overwork it! I think I can see why you might want to change/improve some things, but it does look pretty good as it is, I reckon you could call it done if you wanted :)

Thank you so much for your compliments and comment @ryivhnn :D A part of me is actually considering calling it finished at this point because of the paper! As it turns out this is a horrible paper for charcoal drawing!! It just keeps on getting fuzzier and fuzzier. If you ever come across Velin Johannot paper, DON'T use is for charcoal drawings! Heheh.. Thanks again! ;)

Beautiful picture! I love the expression on her face. It is really cool seeing the progression of your art in pictures. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us. It is wonderful.

Thank you so much for your sweet comment @lifemovedbysteem! :D

self-portrait? very beautiful and graceful.

No, not a self portrait originally, but I do think some of me got in there non the less, hehe! Thank you very much @lavater! :D
