The bridge got its name due to the fact that initially all its parts were made of stone. The stone bridge was built in 1766 - 1776 on the project of military engineer-bridge builder Nazimov. The bridge of the parabolic form is made of granite, the bridge fence is made of cast iron, built into granite pedestals.
This bridge became famous for the fact that in 1880 the revolutionaries from the Narodnaya Volya organization were preparing an attempt on the emperor Alexander II on this bridge. The revolutionaries laid the bomb under the bridge for the explosion, when Alexander II was to drive across the bridge. But the attempt did not take place, as there was no certainty that the bridge would collapse from the explosion. In the spring of 1881, 7 poods of dynamite were extracted from under the bridge, when Emperor Alexander II was already killed as a result of a bomb explosion elsewhere.
The bridge reached us practically in the form that was built in 1776. He was subjected to only minor repairs.
You learned about another bridge across the Griboyedov Canal in St. Petersburg.
