Alarchin Bridge - a bridge across the Griboedov Canal along which the English Avenue passes. The bridge received its name due to the name of one of the employees of the Russian Navy, who lived next to the bridge.
At this point in 1752 a wooden bridge was built, which lasted for 30 years.
At the time of completion of the embankment facing the canal with granite, a new bridge of the typical design of the late 18th century was built. The construction lasted from 1783 to 1785. The project was carried out on the basis of the Pikalov Bridge: a typical three-span wooden beam bridge on granite-faced pillars of rubble masonry. On the pillars of the bridge were four granite obelisks with lanterns.
In 1906 - 1908 the bridge was rebuilt according to the project of architect Alexei Ivanovich Zazersky. The wooden beams of the bridge were replaced with metal beams, the bridge was enlarged, obelisks with lanterns were placed on shore corner supports. In this form, the bridge has survived to the present day.

The amazing part is that now a days with all the modern tools and knowledge and technology nothing is built to last. Everything that the governments of the world build is only to last for a few years, then is all rebuilt and done again , over and over. The cost to the tax payers is phenomenal.

Of course the architecture of past times is magnificent and gorgeous. But it seems to me that even then the authorities did not consider the opinion of the people. Sometimes they built buildings in spite of financial possibilities and technical expediency. For the construction of masterpieces, which we admire were spent years and human lives. But for the sake of beauty, it could be right.
