I have been traveling with family lately and been really busy now that I'm home and getting caught up with everything I missed. But now that we are back, I have a whole bunch of content to post and have some fun with.
So today we are going to start off with a tour of part of our STL trip and end it with an ART contest. Here we go!
We headed down town to give a boys a ride up in the Gateway Arch and to see the underground FREE museum they have there. The museum contains all kinds of artifacts from early natives who lived in the area as well as lots of education on the westward expansion that mostly started from this city.
When we got up to the arch entrance, we quickly discovered that while they were allowing the trams the ride up to the top, the museum was closed for renovations and the next tram wasn't available for 2 more hours.
So we decided that maybe we would wait until our next trip to see the arch. The boys were really disappointed because they know we don't make this trip very often. It would be years before we are back. But instead we decided to go check out the Saint Louis Art Museum in the city's Forest Park.
My oldest has been studying art and history in his home school work and he really enjoys it. This museum is free to the public and is chalked full of art ranging from ancient to the Renaissance to post modern. Much of it valued at beyond priceless. Not to mention that this month, there was a collection of medieval weapons and armor the boys wanted to check out.
Inside the museum all the art is on display separated by time periods. You are given a map when you first enter that will detail where many important pieces are on display.
Here is Joshua @thehomeschoolkid standing beside an over 3000 year old stone relief carving of Nimrod from ancient Iraq/Babylon. (He didn't have his hammer with him that day, besides they would have made him leave it in the car, I'm sure. LOL)
Here Joshua @thehomeschoolkid is again standing by an over 3000 year old statue of Isis on display from Egypt. This is where the celebration of easter comes from. That round disc in her crown is the sun and she was the worshipped in the celebration of the return of the spring equinox. The egg is one of the hieroglyphs that is used to spell her name.
The boys have been studying some classic art and Jaimie wanted to see some of the more famous art pieces on display at the museum. Here I am shouldered by two of the displayed Vincent Van Gogh paintings.

Nice artwork, I know your kids will remember it! I took mine to Chicago to see museums and they still talk about it. The dinos, the mummies, and the U boat; were the hits that trip. It sure stays with them, so keep it up! I knew the artist and painting (art appreciation classes) but I was too late, ROFLOL! Keep posting!

Wow! Would really love to see the U-boat there. Traffic in Chicago keeps me away. I had nightmares the last time I returned from there. :)

Yes, traffic sucks there, LOL! The U-505 was captured on the high seas, by Commander Dan Gallery's hunter killer group. The only thing that kept him from being court marshaled was he told them he was going to catch one. He was such a big joker, they laughed, so he went out and got one! They were trying to protect the Enigma code, and did Not want a captured sub, because the Germans would change the code if they knew. Your kids would eat it up, good History lessons. The tyrannosaurus in the entry lobby would amaze them too! Keep posting, you remind me if my Son-in-law! I enjoy your content.
My nightmare was that they wanted me to move there, and be their world wide problem solver! I had to quit to get away from that mess!
A little closer to home in Muscogee Oklahoma, is a fleet boat the USS Batfish. The traffic is a lot nicer, and the boat is bigger. There is also a piece of the USS Oklahoma there, along with lots of military hardware the boys can climb on. She holds the record for sinking 3 enemy submarines, in 3 days. You can also see round patches on the west side, where she was straffed by one if our own anti submarine aircraft. There is one point common to both boats; there is an acoustic torpedo in the USS Batfish, called a Cutie, which is a direct copy of one from the U-505. Be safe!

Looks you had a lot of fun in STL! Museums are a favourite place of mine to visit. Looks like they hit the jackpot. Sorry, they didn't get to go up in the Arch...
