Character Concept Art - Alien Heads

The story is evolving. These are concepts for a personal concept art project I've been working on, I talk a bit more about it in some previous posts. Here and here.

Initially these aliens were going to be pretty scary, like jailers, but the more I'm developing the story, I'm actually moving toward them being more like stern teachers. They are teaching their experiment subjects to use psychic powers. The subjects are not aware that they're subjects though. They've been brainwashed since birth to believe that they are training for a great cause, to save "their" planet. Truthfully, the entire experiment is to assess the psychic potential of several "lower beings" with the goal of once they've found a good fit, to invade that races planet and use all the inhabitants for slave labor.

These were my first real explorations of the aliens. When developing something like this I typically like to do a first pass on everything before I start to put a lot of time and energy into some more finished pieces. Basically I see it like I'm creating my set of toys, that once finished I'll really be able to play with without worrying about what things are supposed to look like.

Here's a few other quick doodles made in the process.

Cool characters @midlet :)

Dope, the third one is my favorite (the one with the monocle 🧐 ) he kinda reminds me of modok when u put the arms on him. Lol. Good post.

The backstory behind them are great.

My favorites is 3 and 6 (top to right, then next row) They bring out the more "wise" yet evil look to them without looking too evil. They also feel more uncannily human but not.

I'd probably work the posture and body proportions a lot more. In general though, I can't help but think of the Kimoneans in the Star Wars - the Clone Wars.

Thanks @ trinumedia! Yea, really just starting on the overall body proportions. Still brainstorming that. The first ideas I push out are always generic things I've seen before(like the Kimoneans, haha) I find it helps me to just go ahead and draw them even though I know I won't pick them in the end, it's like my brain needs to get it out to put it behind me. Thanks for the feedback!

Hah!

I knew there was a smack of Kimoneans there. And yes, good exercise on the tracing of ideas to first understand how to do it before you do your variations. Looking forward to future updates of these guys - and more the story!

I like that the aliens are not actually bad... I think it makes a more interesting story than if they are. They do look kinda evil though, so maybe it’s the humans who will be prejudiced to be hostile towards them?

Nice process blog :).

Thanks @scrawly! Yea, they're just more evil on the inside. They're still planning to enslave an entire planet :p

Eeeeekkk! That’s totally super evil! Is there no good alien in the story? ^^

Haha, well I hadn't gotten into it yet, but I was thinking that maybe they have multiple alien instructors, like a sci-fi Hogwarts :p and one of the instructors feels bad about the project and invasion, and he or she is the one that helps the protagonists escape to warn Earth. There are also the other "students" they will all be unwitting aliens that are being experimented on with the humans.

Perfect sketches, @midlet. You professionally draw!

Thanks @feelisgood! :)

Yea so much personality. now theyre getting into the Sci-Fi novel range for me, like characters the protagonist would need to ...negotiate with

the guy on the right looks more like a merchant. the guy on the left looks more like a sage. i think it would entertain me personally if the aliens were different species, some more recently having been incorporated into the collective and now lauding the benefits of the psychic training they underwent to the newly arrived subjects... :)

@klumsyk Haha, it's funny you say that because as I was designing these, I was like, hmm, if I make one alien race I have to design an overall look then design a bunch of characters all in that formula, which sounds hard and laborious haha. But if it's more of a collective, I can go nuts and have fun. So I'm sure you know which road I'm going down.
