More Substance Practice

So I took a shot at making a more detailed tile material in Substance Designer. For those that don't know Substance Designer is a procedural 3D texture creation software. It's sort of like visual scripting except the final output is a set of textures instead of a piece of software.

This time I added mold and discoloration in the grout as well as some subtle overall dirt and variation in the tiles color. The tiles also have a little bit of random rotation to make them feel more realistic. Since I've been playing around with this I've been paying a lot more attention to the details of surfaces in my day to day life. Some things I've learned is that everything is a lot dirtier than you'd probably visualize it if you were just thinking about it, and there are a ton of imperfections and wear and tear on just about everything. I also learned that everything is dirtier in the corners and where the wall meets the floor. I guess because people aren't walking in those places.

Now I just need to think of a scene for my tile. I might be going about this in the wrong order lol.

On an unrelated note, Steem is having a decent pump which is nice, but I remember last year this time where Steem was about $3.30, somewhere around there. I never thought I'd be getting excited for $.48 Steem. Oh well, it is what it is, just gotta keep on Steemin.

Hope you all are having a good one. Thanks for looking!

The mold in the grout looks very realistic. Grout is usually sanded or unsanded grout. Would a corner in a shower be part of an inverted cube? Think about it. 😊

The reality is amazing and the light source, does that have to be programmed in as well or is it part of the over all application, like do you choose where the light source comes and the programmed does it for you?

Thanks @donnadavisart! So there are multiple lighting setups shipped with the app that you can shuffle through to try out different lighting scenarios and you can also import your own. It’s handled by a type of image called an hdri (high dynamic range) image which is basically a 360 degree photo of an environment.

great stuff! I would add a tiny amount of specularity or shiness to the white compost between the tiles but nonetheless, impressive!!

Thanks @kingyus! Yea I pretty much killed all spec in the grout but you’re probably right there would be some in there.

Good luck calibrating that, I wish rendering was much easier like extracting it from a super HD camera shots and making materials out of it almost instantaneously lol maybe with some easy tweaks ;) ...everybody would render but the camera should be really expensive and so it wouldn't disrupt the industry but it would def speed up the process , I quit cause am not patient, but it's an amazing job, cheers

Great stuff, I only use blender and I achieve good results like this, but I'm thinking of using substance designer after I heard about its speed in doing things. Can you give your advice please. Thank you
