Today I thought I’d give you a peak at some of what I have going on in my studio.
People - friends and strangers alike - frequently stop by my ceramics studio to see what we’re doing and what’s in process. These visitors see my shop in its natural state of sort of organized mostly mess.
Sometimes we have large projects that are the most impressive to see but more often than not, there are several smaller projects at various stages. At the very least we’ll have a commission or 2, a product order, and there always seem to be samples in the works. Best of all, I usually have an experiment or 2 going on for my own curiosity.
And when I say “today” I really mean in the past few days or so.
First, we've been making some sample boards of a few Perennial designs for a local showroom here in Portland.
WHEAT design "parts" already cut and drying
Rob setting WHEAT oblivious to me taking the photo because he's listening one of the many podcasts he follows
A better look at the design
Below is the SAMOS design board that I just finished putting together, as a part of this grouping:
And QUINCE TREE design board almost finished, but those lighter pieces still need to be glazed. I wanted to look at how the dispersion of darks and lights so far before glazing the rest:
Here's the palette to accompany these:
Last week I began a Sri Yantra for my aunt in San Francisco, here is the color palette
(for more on the Sri Yantra mandala, see this post from a few months back):

And some of the sketches I'm making to think through the design for this one:
Some glaze samples for a fireplace project with a interiors firm in NY that's new to me and I hope this is the first of many projects with them:
Yesterday Rob was cutting some samples for CLOUD PORCELAIN our new production tile collection:
And later today, this is where he'll sand down some of those tiles that have dried :
Some of those same tiles that were made last week and are finished and waiting for the rest:
I’m making a fireplace surround for my sister and brother-in-law on Long Island, and currently both Rob and I are cutting out the design:
As you may know, I love collaboration and especially with fellow Steemians. Last summer @fairytalelife did some photoshop layups of my initial design inspirations that I used show to my sister and brother my ideas, this was the one they chose:
These are the samples I made for myself to test out some colors:
And here it is in process:
And lastly, as a solution to the sizable rent increase on my studio building, I've cleared out some small spaces to rent out. This sculptor has already settled into her space:
Here's the last remaining space:
Do you like this virtual studio visit kind of thing for a post? I'd like to know! I thought I might do them every few weeks on a regular basis to show you progress with the everyday happenings in my shop. As always, thank you for taking a look at my post and I welcome your feedback, comments and communications!
all photos, designs and work are the property of Ruth Frances Greenberg
Organised mess and beautiful colour palettes - just my kind of thing. I loved peaking into your studio.

It's really interesting to see that you are working on so many projects at a time. As not-an-artist, I think of artists working on one thing. But I see from your post that there's a lot more going on with being an artist! So more posts like this would be nice, from my perspective.
The Quince Tree and Samos are so complicated -- and nice! Congratulations on your Cloud Porcelain!
