Hand-carved shrine

in art •  7 years ago

Next door to the bookshop I work at is a gift shop that specialises in Tibetan Bhuddist items: mainly incense but also prayer flags, devotional objects and meditation cushions. The owner also sells jewellery, singing bowls and other items that she imports from Nepal. A while ago, she bought this spectacular hand-carved wooden shrine and had it shipped over and keeps it in the shop.
This picture shows most of it

It was difficult to photograph properly because the shop is so cluttered but here are some pictures of some of the details. The bottom doors are carved with the eight auspicious symbols, a different one on each door. These creatures are on the top corners. I don't know what they symbolise.

A very interesting item that seems out of place in a gift shop although it attracts a lot of attention from those who go in

Ah! That is so cool!! Handcrafted too, amazing details

It is beautiful

It would have taken a lot of work to create such detail.

For sure!

This is fantastic! I love this piece so much, do u know how old it is? The colors are insane and the details.. BUY IT!

I'll ask about the age, I don't think that it's so old though. I don't have nearly enough money to buy such a thing

You can always sell a kidney (kidding)

lol! I'm too old for my kidneys to be worth much

Well.. Lets keep both kidneys then haha

Wow.. looks very beautiful and detailed.

The amount of detail takes a dedicated artist to a whole new level. In Indonesia there are many hand carved statues that are similar, usually with incense burning and fruit at the base.

Wow, that's some amazing artistry; all that detail and intricate carving; so colourful! Can't even imagine having something like that shipped from Nepal and having it arrive in one piece. Some good sleeping nooks for a cat, too!

=^..^=

Great work, looks very nice and mystical! :D
