Sketch 4: Clashes

in art •  7 years ago

Every youth must have experienced the clashes of traditions and modernity all their lives. This is especially true to tribal communities whose history was not so pleasant during colonial era. Some youth don't even know how to speak in their mother-tongue, some don't even know how many tribes there are in their country. Some were discouraged from learning because some old folks said they're a waste for not being able to speak their original language.

Well I say, traditions are important, but so does progress. In a world that is developing rapidly, no society is going to survive without youths who challenged traditions and change it to suit the modern world. However, no society is unique if it forgets its heritage. Language, dances, customs can be learned over time. The most important thing is to always be educated in it, and to not be overtly rigid about it.

Thank you very much~

I totally agree. I feel like I've experienced this with some of my own upbringing. Having strong Thai influence but also growing up in Australia has left me with a lot of contradicting values pushed onto me. I would never trade my culture for anything but it also has to move forward with my individual growth. I love this piece. Well done. 😊

@neeqi, how true! So many times the contradictions made me confused as to what should be done. Some of our traditional folks would scoffed at some younger generations to have forgotten our heritage (because I honestly do not like some old traditions of mine like our drinking culture and I refuse to be proud of it). But some tradition like poetry exchange in marriage, sharing of responsibilities among families for harmony, tribal punishment by giving gifts to offended parties and such are definitely important and unique to every culture. Modernity however will help society to grow stronger and better, so there should be a compromise between the two. Thank you for sharing your thought~

I totally agree. There is a lot of value in keeping to some traditions, they hold weight because they have been successful over time - there is wisdom and age and that's important. But it also pays to be conscious that life is in constant motion which does require adaptation but it does not mean we can not appreciate or have respect for where things have originated from. Some of your traditions sound really lovely. 🌻

thoughtful ! and that is a very nice pic, also :)
