Today’s shot is another shot from my grandparents house. They have so many antiques and great things from history to photograph. This is an antique sign from an unknown restaurant printed on August 1st, 1929. I chose to make the focal point of this photo the date because it’s an interesting distance from now. It’s seems like a long time ago but it really isn’t. Segregation in America only ended in the 1950’s so this sign is from the early period of segregation. Although society tries to make us forget about slavery and segregation we have to remember it all “technically” only ended about 70 years ago. Even though slavery itself lasted in America over 400 years. That’s like if slavery started today, segregation wouldn’t end until the year 2418! And still to this day it is an undeniable fact that people of “color” (black, Hispanics, Native Americans) still face injustices in America so, did it really end?
I’ve never asked why, but this sign hangs in my grandmothers kitchen I’m sure to remind us all where we’ve come from. It’s sad to know that there was a time when people were judged by the color of their skin, and even thought that a certain color of skin meant that they were better than someone. But it’s good to know that today people are at least trying to see the truth, that we are all equal. We all breathe air and we all bleed ONE color. RED.
