Original oil on Masonite Board: Island on the Rideau River

An 8 x 10 oil painting on Masonite board. Painted from the kayak on the Rideau River in Canada.

This is my favorite part of the river. It is a small island covered with Cedar. spruce, birch and Maple Trees.

Often people are camping here with tents and they are quite surprised when they come down to the shore and see me painting from my boat.

My process: paint a burnt Siena undercoat on the 8 x 10 Masonite board. Let it dry... pack about 5 boards into my lightweight painter box. Walk my kayak down to the river... paddle along until I see something I would like to paint. Squeeze out paint onto my brush and paint quickly. I start with dark darks and paint the sky last... the opposite of how I paint with watercolour.

Never seen an artist painting with the boat ) But this is amazing! You can choose any position!

Yes.... and sometimes my painting will have a cubist feel when I become untethered and start to drift downstream and paint many parts of the river in one painting.

I think these only gives your paintings originality

I love this art. Whating this, it seems to me that I can feel the playing of shadow and light on my own skin.

Thanks
