I've always wanted to create a comic, since my teens I've come up with many ideas but I've just felt like life was getting in the way of that goal and it would always be put to the back of my mind.
But recently, 13 days ago to be precise I came across a challenge on the internet called 100 Days of Making Comics. This challenge was created by Kevin Cross an artist in the US.
The aim of the challenge is to do at least 30 minutes a day working on a comic, I’ve found 30 minutes isn’t that long, it’s part an episode of a Netflix show, it’s a couple of games of Overwatch, It’s definitely achievable.
So how do I approach it? I set my timer for 30 minutes and get to work it can be either doodling, writing, creating thumbnails, absolutely anything, but you do find yourself going over the allotted time and there's no pressure there at all.
I think this process can work with anything.
Here's a video of me talking through the process and below it I'll put images from the first 10 days.
My Comic is called "Status: It's Complicated "
Here's the premise.
"It was the 10th September 2001 when Dave and his wife decided to call it a day. It was very amicable. He goes into work the next day and gets no sympathy.
This is a story of one man’s journey to becoming single after many years with his childhood sweet heart, he has to learn to get back onto a scene he’s never even been part of."
I’ve wrote the script and I’ve been sitting in it for years , it got down to the last 80 for a BBC Sitcom competition.
And the story needs to be told.
Day 01 Character Design : Dave
Day 02 Character Design : Brian , Dave's boss not only a boss, but a friend , his words not anyone elses.
Day 03 Character Design : Hannah , Dave's wife (soon to be ex wife) I've put her name a Emily but that's changed.
Day 04 , Page 01 , thumbnail
Day 05 doing traditional art using ink pens and markers
Day 06 Jumping into Clip Studio on the Ipad Pro.
** Day 07, laying down some halftone**
Days 8 and 9 consisted of just watching youtube videos on tutorials and tidying up my script and making it more comic friendly.
And finally
Day 10 creating thumbnails and working on page 02
I've really enjoyed working on this project and I'll post up more, if you want to get involved you can do by joining the facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/THEE100s/ its a great group and very encouraging , but be warned if you do want to participate you've got to be really committed to it , but as I said earlier 30 minutes a day is achievable.
