Nightmares?
I'm sharing with you the process of how I created 'Ants', an illustration for Chapter Twenty Two of Doug Karr's thrilling novel Dwelling. This is the third of three drawings I have created for this chapter, other drawings for this chapter of Dwelling include Layers and Stairway.
It was too late at night, he should have waited till morning, her face was peeling, she needed her makeup, and the other ones, what he could see of them inside the shadows, were shifting their heads side to side so rapidly the sockets of their eyes and mouths formed stacks of gyrating black gashes, as he continued to power his eyelids and point his face into the darkness he felt her slipping to where the shadows started to blur...

they were everywhere now, all around, too many to count, a thousand ants emerged from his scalp and scuttled down his shoulders towards the floor, they were on him now and their faces were ghastly, even with the gyrations he could make out the dark slits of their eyes, the gaping blackened mouths, he felt his legs buckle under, slamming the floor boards, his breathing clenched as they started to drag him hungrily sideways across the floor.

Fear was compounded by mortification as his bowels let loose for the first time in days, he reached for his shins and pulled them in close so that as little as possible of his skin was exposed to the seething black clouds of hungry ghosts all around.

I have always found ants to be quite fascinating, they often appeared as subjects in my poetry. Great drawing.

I did use a brush for the majority of it - i suppose the quick brush strokes does give it that calligraphy feel.
