Splattered

I'm sharing with you 'Palette Knife', a drawing I created for Chapter Twenty Seven of Doug Karr's thrilling novel Dwelling.

Dorian stood before a large blank canvas, staring blankly, palette knife in hand. Who was he kidding? He didn't even have a show. And everything he'd ever made, everything he'd struggled so hard to create was long since forgotten. Inconsequential.

Creating an illustration for Dwelling

April1815.jpg

The image of the palette knife was sketched out in pencil on the paper, then masking tape was applied over the top. Layers of ink splatter were then added using old brushes to spray and flick the ink on the paper.

Water was added to the some of the layers of ink splatter before it had dried to create a range of surface patterns. More ink splatters were then built up, creating areas of darker tones.

Once the ink was dry the masking tape was removed, leaving the white shape of the palette knife.

A paintbrush was used to add subtle tones on the palette knife's surface. Then a dip pen was used to add detail and outlines, and a feather dipped in ink created a series of marks across the knife's blade.

He'd signed his own Do Not Resuscitate order with a stream of pathetic efforts that amounted solely to thousands of dollars in wasted pigment

Ink on paper

He slumped back on the couch, tossing his palette knife onto the paint-splattered coffee table. The evening light outside his window slowly faded as Dorian continued to wonder just exactly what the hell he thought he was doing with his life.
