'Mighty oaks from little acorns grow'

I'm currently working on a project involving oak leaves. The work for this isn't finished, but I thought it would be interesting to show you the process from my initial paintings to developing more of a motif based design.

Design 1

Layers of watercolour paints make up the colours of the leaves. Once the paint is dry lines are drawn over the top using drawing ink and a dip pen. Finally, white paint is used to add thick lines over the top of the leaves.

Design 2

I used the testing paper for the first design for this piece! Adding thicker bands of colour down the middle using watercolours. Once dry an ink design was drawn over the top. Can you see how this design has simplified from the first painting?

Design 3

I switched the process around for this final design, starting first with the ink drawing using black drawing ink and applying this with a dip pen. Three thick stripes of colour are added using watercolour once the ink was dry.

Right, back to work. I have the final design to work on now!

These oak leafs are getting yellow... September is coming and we know what's coming with it

Autumn! I found a red leaf on the ground this week- i think it may already be here!

I'm gonna cry, again I'm gonna sleep 2 hrs and sit in front of my laptop doing things :( Hmm, why didn't you made it on a paper? :) Maybe it would look like traffic light :D ( bad joke I know) I think it would be cool if you used red on edges :) Thank you for paintings

Ahh the sounds of Autumn, and the smell of crushed leaves.

Beautiful artwork and talent.

Wow! It's great work! Lovely painting.

Thank you @creativewoman :D

I like the way you draw the oak leaves. It is a nice loose draw/painting. There is a lot of energy in the piece, @opheliafu
Keep up the good work

I'm happy you picked up on that energy in the line- it takes a bit of work to get the pressure correct and the angle of the dip pen right to create a sweeping line

:) I am aware of your touch with the dip pen.

Do you find that your black ink runs when you apply watercolor paint on top? That's been the case for me. Or do you recommend a certain kind of ink that doesn't smear? Have you ever considered illustrating children's books? You'd be a natural at that.

I use different inks depending on if I want them to run when wet or stay put, be matt or glossy. This is a water-resistant one, I usually give it 10 minutes before applying any wet medium over the top.

Thanks so much for helping me to understand. I will look for a pen with "water-resistant" on the label, and give the ink plenty of time to dry.

great work, @opheliafu ! I have to say that I love oak trees, there are more of them close t my city.
Thanks for share the steps of your pieces, I really love to watch the "behind the scenes" of an artist ^_^

I'm still working on a piece i'm happy with for this project, but I think it's fun to show the process of design sometimes.

The only think i know about oake leaf is that there is one on the canadian flag...or thats from another tree :D

Is that a maple leaf?

Great one my friend @opheliafu !

Thank you!

These woke up my childish memories:) At the age of 8 I was going to the library through the park with a lot of oaks, oh how awesome they were, what a great share of leaves:) I'm not even mentioning looking for the acorns in autumn, I loved it so much:)

Oak trees - a frenzy of squirrels in the autumn burying nuts!

Wow awesome drawing. Followed and upvoted. Hope you'll do the same

I like your technique.. it is truly simple.
