My Painting of The Tbilisi Tiger

My dear friend's cat recently passed and I wanted to honor them both with a soulful rendering of the departed feline. Now this particular furry friend had a good long life, was loved by various animals & humans (and possibly some dolphins)... who entered this life on the other side of the world from which he exited. His time spent in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles (California) were his golden years and he was part and parcel of the local "scene" there.

But for us today, here before Tiger's likeness (actually two duplicates).. we choose to recognize his birthplace. The legendary city of Tbilisi, Georgia (not the State of Georgia, the country).. was were the young Tiger cut his teeth in this world.. shredding and mauling rodents, small avians as well as a variety of fish. This ancient bastion of feline felicity expounds from it's bosom the very essence of that which is in fact feline... and thus Tiger.

Here we see his eyes... savage perhaps (to the more domesticated of us).. but honest and pure as is the purpose of Cat.

Close up of Tiger 2

This was a simultaneously painted second version.. not initially intended to be a copy.. but it was quite helpful for me as the artist to bounce off from one to the other, trying to improve each without reinventing the wheel.

This is a photo of both paintings from an iPhone6+:

The colors are most true however with the scan:

Lemme just mention that painting is WORK. No pain No gain. You HAVE to repaint it... throw it out even and start again without remorse NOR EMOTION.. do it again.. just like with music, sports, whatever... nothing is written in stone and nothing has to be a masterpiece. Just so long as it makes sense visually and that you can improve it while feeling happy and optimistic about the future.

why did you paint two of them though? just to be able to choose the better version?

I was struggling with the first one, trying to get the fur to appear convincing. After getting to a point where I thought that it might be easier just to start fresh, I begin the second one not really sure if i was abandoning the first.

By the time I was easily going back-and-forth between the two, I felt that they each could improve with just a bit more effort. So I salvaged the first one and brought them both to a competent conclusion. But by doing two simultaneously (instead of in succession) was actually advantageous to both.

Sometimes, if you don't first do a series of "studies" where you would work-out certain issues like the handling of the fur, you wind up doing what I did... shooting from the hip and wingin' it.
