The Sirens

There is a (lethal) sensuous lethal & fluidity in The Sirens arising from their aquatic nature. The original Femme Fatales The Sea Nymphs of Greek Mythology lured unwary sailors to their death on the rocks with voluptuous enchantment.

Details

Close up details reveal the three intertwined female figures which are also included as a motif in the Gates of Hell; 6 metre high Bronze Doors commissioned for a museum which never opened.

Personal

Rodin worked on the doors for over 37 years. Originally conceived as depicting the many tortured souls from Inferno the first section of Dante's Divine Comedy, the piece eventually became a personal work including many of Rodin's own figures and symbols including The Thinker
