I've got another piece fresh out of the oven for you! This time, it's a full illustration! :D
I want to preface this post by mentioning that I rarely ever show my process for full illustration works, and there's a reason for it. On other websites (and perhaps here, as well), there are a lot of young, aspiring illustrators who follow my work, and my process is ill suited for any artist who is still working hard at learning the basics. As you will see, my composition "sketch" is a composite of 3 different photographs bashed together with a variety of color and value adjustments applied to them to create one harmonious color story.
While photographs are very helpful and commonly used tools to use in both digital and traditional mediums, they should really only be used as part of an illustration's composition if you already have a solid grasp on color, lighting, and values. Otherwise, you may find that their use falls flat of their intended purpose, and can really hinder/cheapen the look of an illustration rather than serve as a helpful tool in composing your painting. Otherwise, experimenting with different methods of thumbnailing, sketching, and painting is always a great idea if you're still looking for a process that best suits what you want your work to do for you!

A small heist goes awry, and Maika flees into the Drowned City in effort to lose her pursuers.
She trades a caravan of angry merchants for the company of the spiteful god Ishavan.

@painted-bees absolutely beautiful. Even your sketches are amazing. I think it's hard to show a process when you're creating. I always have extra admiration for those that can.

oh no, the original photograph is made up of three different photographs! One for the ruin on the left, one for the right, and one for the water :D and I just tweaked each piece of it a bunch, altered the perspective, etc to make it look like a single photograph. I could never just use one photo, since my settings usually don't actually exist in real life (and I'd never want to copy the setting from an existing story). I'm super glad it's convincing enough to make you think so, though, hehe!
(the ruin on the right is from a place in india, the ruin on the left...I'm not sure, but it looks a little more greek... and the water is from a photograph of a swimming pool hahaha!)

Oh man, I think I've only ever played the old DOS prince of persia game when I was...probably too young to have been allowed to play it..! I'm willing to bet the series got a lot more advanced and beautiful since then :D

Interesting illustration @painted-bees .. that fantasy beast really strange with separated legs in the middle part and it must be hard for it to keep its balance, but it is a god anyway 😉 luv the colour of Maika's outfit.

Thank you so much! Hehe his form is constantly changing, rearranging, shifting...He's always growing limbs and reabsorbing them. It wasn't supposed to be this way and he doesn't like it much! He'd much prefer to have a solidly fixed, properly functioning shape... but alas.

I hope you consider this a compliment, because it's meant to be—in some of the stages the rather large creature here, Ishavan, I believe, looks like someone at Disney drew it. Very Disney-esque pre-CGI cartoon days.
