“In his house at R’lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.”

I'm a big fan of Lovecraft minus his racism and I had multiple opportunities to depict some of his creations for client, being Cthulhu the one I recreated the most.

This is a piece I created some years ago when I was starting the transition from digital to pen and ink work.
The piece was commissioned by the now extinct Brazilian brand Crânio, and I was asked to create Cthulhu, but the curious thing about this piece is that the brand was more focused on parodies of the pop culture, and as such the client was expecting something funny or cartoonish from me, something I really don't do, and as a fan and being the first time someone asked a Cthulhu from me I wanted to create something worth of the being and not a parody anyway.

Suffice to say that the client wasn't really satisfied with my direction, but the shirt turned out to be a success!

Final Piece

Some months later I was reached by the Dark Ambience Music Label Cryo Chamber, they liked the first Cthulhu I made so much that hey wanted me to replicate it, but I wouldn't ever do that, so I made them two versions.

This was the first one presented, they didn't like because it wasn't similar to the original. So I scraped it and went back to drawing board. A year later this piece ended being a gig poster for the band Jupiterian

This was the second one presented, then approved and turned into shirt.
I really like the second one as it turned out to have an old engraving kinda of feel. But unfortunately I never got my copy of the shirt on the mail and wasn't able to see it printed up close.

And while writing this post I realized it has been some time I haven't draw a new Cthulhu, so maybe it's about time to make an upgraded new piece!
