This explains how to paint a raven on a branch with a spooky background to get you in the mood for Halloween.

You will need :

  • Titanium white
  • Yellow Oxide
  • Dioxazine Purple
  • Mars Black

1.jpg

Brushes You Need:

  • A fat, natural hair round brush
  • A quarter inch angle brush
  • A small round brush

Steps:

Using the brush dry, dip the fat round brush into the Titanium white paint. Then pick up a of the tiny amount Yellow Oxide. Decide where you want your light source to be and create a circle using the tip of the brush.

BeFunky-Collage.jpg

You can add little more white to the center of the circle to keep it bright, if you like.

8.jpg

For the next layer of the circle, pick up white and and more yellow than you did the first time. Your brush strokes should always be round, following the original shape in the middle.

10.jpg

Use gentely pressure to get a nice, soft, blend and slightly overlap the previous section.

11.jpg

Every time you get more paint pick up less white and more yellow. Don't worry about blending the colors perfectly. the streaks of dark & light will help create dimension.

12.jpg

Now pick up only yellow and a tiny hint of Dioxazine Purple and repeat the same as above.

14.jpg

Use same color combination all the way around your circle.( i keep using more purple and little yellow gradually same as above steps)

14.jpg

15.jpg

At this point, you should be using 25% yellow to 75% purple paint.

16.jpg

Only picking purple at this point

For the last small section, pick up purple and bit of black for the corners.

20.jpg

Now for tree branch we gonna use angle brush. Wet it in your water jar. Mix a bit of black paint with the water in the brush, as black paint spreads easily with extra water in the brush.

Using the edge of the brush, not the flat, sketch out where you want the branch. Then put little pressure over the brush to get thick branch to get the fatter part. Just remember that branches are thicker where they start and thinner where they end.

20.jpg

we are now going to sketch our Raven/crow with the small round brush. Mix a small drop of water with a little bit of black paint so that it's almost the consistency of ink again.

Start by drawing a line where the bird's bum is going to be. This prevents the bird from going too high or too low on the branch. Then sketch out an ovel for the body. keep refining the ovel until you get the desired shape and size. Then draw the head part.

To Highlight feathers, use a bit black, yellow and white.

24.jpg

25.jpg

To Highlight braches, use a bit black, yellow and white.

26.jpg

After that added smaller branches.

27.jpg

Just keep adding highlights until it looks perfect.

Wow! so amazing work.. awesome buddy..

I love the lesson and theme, I tried painting a long time ago...it didn't work out too well.

Do you do watercolors? If so I'd like to see a Halloween type watercolor painting tutorial.
