I was chatting with a colleague today and found myself reminiscing about the glory days of the internet.
Don’t get me wrong, the internet is far superior today. Faster, mobile and for us web geeks, so many tools to develop with and the ability to launch a site in days rather than weeks. Shoot sometimes even an hour and you’re in business. However, our discussion was more about “artistic creativity”.
Back in the day (not that long ago) web designers strived to create visual masterpieces. We tried to out do then next guy. Then along came smart phones and tablets which totally changed the game. Not only was responsiveness a necessity, Apple single handedly eliminated Flash as a tool for us to use. WordPress and Bootstrap were born and viola now nearly every site on the net looks the same.
A mentor of mine once said, “If everything is bold, nothing is bold!”.
Honestly, maybe we just got lazy and complacent .. I admit it, I did. I got caught up in the plug and play world of quickie solutions that well just worked. While I may have spent an extra 5 or 10 mins on a logo or graphic, I stopped searching for that wow factor. Ya know that one graphical element that stood out in the crowd.
Anywhoo, I wanted to share this with the web world. Maybe it’s time to revisit designing unique, artistic and inspiring web sites again.
