DIY: Ombre Shorts (simple and easy technique)

in art •  7 years ago  (edited)

"Ombre" is a french term meaning shaded or shading.

It became a trend not so long ago. You'll see some social media influencers or fashion icons with ombre-dyed hair. Ombre-dyed shorts are perfect for a casual outfit; whether you're going out with the girls or simply hang out in your favorite coffee shop to log on to Steemit, you will never go wrong pairing this with a plain white tee.

Now that it's summer in the US, I decided to make a tutorial for my little sister who lives in California. It's very simple but it's kinda time-consuming making them. If you want to make your own ombre shorts, simply follow the steps below:

 You will need:

  1. some old jeans
  2. scissors
  3. bleach
  4. basin
  5. bottle spray
  6. rubber gloves
  7. hot water
  8. iodized salt
  9. dye
  10. plastic wraps
  11. studs

 Here's how to make them:

1.) Gather your old jeans and cut it to your desired length. Using a pair of scissors, distress the ends of your denim shorts.

2.) Cover your work surface with plastic wraps. Make sure to secure the ends so the bleach or dye can’t seep through.

3.) Put on your rubber gloves. Bleach can irritate or burn your skin.

4.) Using a bottle spray, apply some bleach on the half part of your shorts then let it dry. It should look like this:

5.) I waited for 24 hours to have it fully-dried. Hand wash your shorts. Machine-wash will ruin the shorts since bleach weakens the fabric. After that, it's time to dye! ---> That doesn't sound right! lol!

6.) Pour boiling water into the basin then add some dye. Stir the mixture with a spoon then add 4 tbsp of iodized salt. Stir it well.

7.) Slowly dip the half of your shorts like so:

8.) After dyeing, lay your shorts on a big plastic bag like this:

9.)  Let it dry overnight so the fabric will absorb the liquid. It's like marinating Barbecue Ribs. :-D

10.)  Machine wash your shorts then rinse till the water becomes clear. Hang it or use a dryer.

11.) Add some studs like spikes or stars. Punched it with the tip end of your scissors.

12.) Voila! You have a brand new super sweet ombre shorts. :-D

Never heard of this "ombre" trend. Nice :) Are you going to open your own firm ?
To be very accurate, "ombre" in french actually means "shadow" or "shade" and "sombre" means "shaded".

Thanks @eternalsunshine! Haha! No I'm not going to open my own firm, this is just a hobby. :)
Thanks for the correction about the french word. I learned something new! :)

Definitely going thrifting and trying this! Doesn't seem too hard !
