Orchid petal origami crane

It has been about two years since I last made origami cranes from flower petals. The craft itself is not difficult, but the time and patience required are critical factors to success.

The latest attempt at this using orchid petals proved to be just as tricky, taking pressed petals provided by a friend and trying to work with them in the hot and humid summer. They are cut into roughly 1cm x 1cm squares using a scalpel blade, and then folded into the traditional crane model by hand only.

Without any special photography equipment, I used a jeweler's loupe combined with my humble phone camera to take the image, hoping to capture the beautiful vein patterns of the flower on the origami crane.

I like using water drops as a size reference because it is very hard to visualize just how small and fiddly the flower petals are to work with.

It is an exercise in mental fitness and mindfulness like no other.

That is really something! Your fingers must be really nimble!

I owe it to my 'mental fitness' more than anything else. It is not hard to do on a normal piece of paper, and the only difference is training your sense of touch to smaller sizes and different materials. If I included a shot of my fingers you'll see that I also just recently trimmed my nails so not fingernails involved either :)

Never seen anything like this, what tenderness and how fragile it looks. And your skill and patience not to be mentioned...

Thank you for the kind comments. I think it is similar skill and patience that I see in your artwork but applied to a different medium/material. Glad I can share my bit of creativity to the steemians community :)

Awesome stuff! I had no idea it was possible to work on such small pieces... It looks absolutely stunning - and fragile.

They look fragile but are surprisingly tough considering the material. Once dried properly it is also waterproof and will retain its shape like dried flowers but gradually lose its colour.

Very impressive
Nice work !
