Before I was cognizant of the artist behind the work, I had seen this piece many times in my childhood.
It was not until I began to page through Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid
Book by Douglas Hofstadter in one of my tedious high school courses that I began to accumulate a higher appreciation of his craftsmanship.
Without delving too deep into the abyss of Dr.Hofstadter's book I would like to talk about the relationship between Escher and mathematics.
Maurits Cornelis Escher(1898-1972) was a Dutch graphic artist who made mathematically-inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints.
Many mathematical concepts are embodied within the work of M.C Escher:
- Tessellations
- Polyhedra
- The Shape of Space
- The Logic of Space
- Self-Reference
- Infinity
