First Reception of 2024 at my gallery. Riddles, by Raz Rotem

in art •  11 months ago

It happened! Yesterday, we opened the gallery for our 2024 season of artists.

First up, I have an artist named Raz Rotem, member of the textile guild of Canada, educator, and artist. The majority of the work he has on display is part and parcel to his dissertation, which he'll be defending come early spring.

This piece is called Ancestors. He's used heat press and image transfer techniques to include portraiture in panels of this quilt. It represents his exploration of his personal identity through icons of his own culture. It's one of my favourites in the show, and we priced it accordingly at 8K.

And before you ask, no, I can't honestly say I've collected the sort of clientele who regularly drops that amount of coin for art, but I would rather my artists sell nothing than get less than they're worth. In any case, it's fine for his work not to move, since he needs to retain it until after he defends his thesis in a few months.

We had an incredible opening. One of our most densely populated yet.

I'm going to post more about Raz' show, and hopefully some of my own work in between. I still have quite a bit to catch up on. He's going to do an artist talk next weekend, as well as a story circle. I think he may even do some live weaving on location between now and then. There's a lot to share and I hope I can keep up.

If any of you live in Toronto, you can come visit us at 222 Spadina Ave in the concourse.

And then, I'll need to work backwards to share all of last year's artists. So stay tuned.
