Dido and Eros.jpg

Laughing at myself right now. I started working on this piece last night, after days of designing. I couldn't find exact references, so I picked the best I could, traced it out, and started blocking some of it...

It's a scene inspired from the Illiad, where the gods conspire to try to trap Aeneas in Dido's land by making her fall in love with him. Eros appears masked as Aeneas, and with a kiss spells her into deep desire for Aeneas.

I made a stylistic decision to give Dido a bit more power in the 'falling in love' spell, since the gods were only allegorical of humankind's fickleness, and she deserves credit for her own free will. So I decided to make her dominant.

And now it looks like she's kneeing him right in the jewels. Lol. Not quite what I'm going for, so there'll be a few changes on the way.

I guess I can see how some design fails happen, where the end result ends up looking much more suggestive of something than you planned. But then, you ought to notice these things before the work is done. Lol.
