Process of Understanding
With any type of art I create, I know that finding a process first can direct creativity in a way that makes it easy to reach the finish line. By studying the subject you find inspiration in, you may learn to understand the subject in a whole new light, and your creativity can spike during this transformation of Understanding.
The above work, titled "Terpenes", was a result of being inspired by the power of plants, and the complexities they offer beyond the most obvious physical and nutritional values. Researching a type of compound found in plants, known as terpenes, I came across one terpene called Caryophyllene. A spicy, peppery terpene found in black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, hops, cannabis, and many others, Caryophyllene has potential properties that allow it to aid in the reduction of inflammation in the body.
My process was instantly inspired by the structure of Caryophyllene. Acrylic on thick cotton paper has an amazing ability to keep defined lines, so using this paper as the background was an easy choice. For feeling through color selection, I’m often motivated by the de-Stijl movement, and the advocated use of straight lines, primary colors, and the black-white spectrum.
After finding my feelings of color, background, technique, and inspiration, everything else came together easily. In fact, creativity seemed to flow from any random value of those four variables: Feeling, Background(Setting), Technique, and Inspiration. Everything else was just played out through this process.
I sometimes find that this process applies to a lot in life, and the understanding that comes from it helps a great deal when realizing what you’ve grown into, or achieved.
The next step, is to start this process all over again...
