Last "Gallery Walk" Night of 2018

Last night marked our final "Gallery Walk" night of the year, here in Port Townsend.

"Gallery Walk" is something that happens on the first Saturday of every month; all the "art spaces" in the downtown area tend to have features of new work, and they stay open later (in our case till 8:00pm) and typically offer refreshments.

The Year in Retrospect

December Gallery Walk is typically very slow — most people are at Holiday parties on Saturday nights — and yesterday was no exception.

We can usually gauge attendance by how many cupcakes and other snacks are left over, at the end of the night... and there were quite a few.

As a small aside, this was the Red Dragonfly's 25th Gallery Walk evening since we opened (we've missed a few, mostly in winter!), which prompted me to pause and take a brief look back.

Declining Interest?

One of the things we've noticed over the past year is that overall (citywide) interest in Gallery Walk seems to be on the wane.

Our local weekly paper used to dedicate a couple of pages to editorial and advertising for the monthly events, but that seems to have declined to almost nothing.

Meanwhile, the evenings bring few people, and the people who do show up are often the same stalwart locals who show up every month for the free wine and food, but who never actually buy art.

With total "after hours" sales last night amounting to just $15.00 — and the gallery's generally precarious financial situation — we're seriously considering whether or not it's worth our while to continue being Gallery Walk participants... at least until late spring or early summer, when the weather is a bit more conducive to people going for an evening stroll.

Other Newsy Bits

In a broader sense, I will be putting a little more time into the Red Dragonfly blog here on Steemit. It has been sadly neglected for the past six months or so, mostly on account of the fact that I have "another job" over and above running the Gallery.

Since the blockchain is often advertised as offering a "permanent record," the nature of the blog will change a little to include a lot more "daily musings" from the gallery, while still having occasional "article like" content from the world of art and creativity.

Like many (I'm sure) we're wondering what's going to happen with Steemit, but for now, we might as well give it our "love and attention," because — as they say — "nothing comes from nothing!"
