Most of my paintings are on glass. I added a contemporary twist to an old technique, called "sous verre" or "hinterglas" by using graphite pencil and other media.
I really like working with glass, as for many things, its actually more durable than other materials. It doesn't wrinkle and you won't dig a hole in it, by using your eraser one to many times. Also, even over centuries, there is no yellowing or deterioration of the material....
Unfortunately, it can break 😧
And sometimes it does...
The owners of this painting "Isis and the Moon" (we are talking about the ancient Egyptian Goddess), were renovating their living room and therefore put their paintings in boxes. Quite a collection I might add. When they wanted to hang their art back on the walls, they discovered, that one of the glass paintings was broken. What a tragedy!!
But it turned out, that the piece was insured. They sent me a photo and I was asked to redo the painting...
Well, normally that's not something I like to do, each piece is one of a kind, but here there was just no other way. One can't just glue it back together...
Since the handmade frame was completely undamaged, in a first step, I took it all apart
I couldn't find my original drawing on paper,
so I carefully traced the drawing from the broken piece
A few steps later, we have the varnished drawing
Finally I could put it all back together.
The owners liked the new version even better than the old one 😀

I agree, the way the lines radiate out seem to add to the piece.
I'd even take it further and have it remounted, with the pieces slightly apart from each other, and a dark epoxy poured into the cracks to seal it in place.

I did that with a few pieces very early in my career... one piece I had cut into pieces to have more control over the "cracks" and one I hit with a hammer.. actually mounted the hammer at that spot.

It does have its own appeal. I had another broken piece from a client and they just wanted me to "repair" it only in a way that the pieces wouldn't fall out of the frame...

that's brutal, brother! i always wondered how physical artists approached something like this. it's easy for me to rewrite a piece from memory, though it will never be the same. but a piece of art??? oh man...damn near irreplaceable and hard to redo.

Yeah, that can ruin your day. Thank god, it doesn't happen very often. I had two from clients and I broke 4 that I had just spent weeks to work on. Two of those I could turn into something new.
Loosing a written piece would be just as devastating I think.. you put a lot into finding the right words and phrases and all and then your computer freezes or something like that.... arrrrrgh ☠️

You are just amazing. I too find beauty in the broken one the way the cracks radiate out from the center of the moon like moonbeams. But I also love the new one, the way the moon is a bit larger or more bold and present with her. Seems she is more radiant as well. Nice Reinhard. 🙏🏽

The broken one definitely has its appeal. Nice idea to compare the cracks to moonbeams, I actually never noticed that, but you are right.
I had two broken pieces from clients, the other one actually didn't want his repainted. Instead he had me "repair" it in a way that one could still see the cracks
Unfortunately I don't have a photo of the finished piece. I fixed with thin metal profiles like the ones you use for Tiffany lamps for instance. Kind of like the metal you see around the glass in the photo.

Glass breaks under certain circumstances, its a fact I chose to live with. I use "normal" glass of a good quality. It is particularly "clean" with almost no green tint... before it became available I used simple window glass.
Of course one can use acrylic glass, but the fragility adds a certain value for me. Would be like having a delicate Chinese vase made from plastic..

The new one with all the little adjustments to it looks REALLY nice. Noticed a few things that were a tiny bit different. Adds a lot too it though. Like the top of the moon. Also the shading in many areas. Adds a lot too it as far as character. Is this something that was talked about, something that happened naturally, or something that you seen you could improve upon?

Yes, there are some differences. First, particularly in this technique with all the semitransparent layers, its simply not possible to make an identical copy. You'd have to do each individual layer identically.
Plus, there are some 10 years between these two pieces. I would hope, that my abilities grew during that time. I simply had better control over the coloring process and therefore the colors are slightly more saturated and the shading is better as you rightfully state.
The clients were aware, that the new painting would be a bit different, but the knew me long enough to trust me with that.

Things like that are truly depressing. Like I said before, thank god its a rare problem. The owners assured me, that they will never store it in a box like that again (with other paintings on top!)

I thought you meant you painted an image of a broken glass not that you literally painted on glass and it broke. I am immediately intrigued by the process of painting on glass, and aside from window displays in stores never really considered it.
So cool and unique!
