🎨 Kidnapped Princess - Europa and the Bull

in art β€’Β  7 years agoΒ

Supposedly the Greek god Zeus was quite the womanizer and the story goes, that he turned himself into a bull, to kidnap the pretty Princess Europa, and haul her across the Mediterranean to a place that was to later receive her name. When I was to paint Europa for a group exhibition at the European Parliament in Brussels, I imagined Europa as some spoiled princess, who was just doing her morning thing, getting pretty for the day...

I painted Zeus as both, a bull, but also as a galley, so he could take her across the ocean. As you can see, there is only one oar, but a giant rudder... just a little cynical thought behind it all about our European rulers (the figures piling up in the back ground), who all want to steer the ship, but nobody wants to row. One of the things I find really absurd is, that with a lot of issues we are being told its "one minute to twelve"... for decades. That's why the clock the one figure is holding just shows a random time, as if the hands are broken and just hanging down...

Oh! I love this naughty picture! The funniest part is the bull's smile! The satisfaction he feels is obvious in there!

Keen eye! Hehe.. yes, ol' Zeus is quite pleased :-)

I am also here laughing at the bulls smile.. how devious he seems!
great work as always!... beautiful colors and interesting at the angle in which her body is laying across...!

She is laying there like this, because I wanted it to be more or less a moment frozen in time... The chair actually exists!

fantastic art πŸ’™πŸ’™
good working and always be happyπŸ’™

Thank you very much πŸ™‚

Another great piece of art :) I am sure it was accepted as it is supposed to be. Correct me if i am wrong, but Zeus was riding a chariot that could fly lol

The exhibition was a great experience and my piece was well received. I think Zeus had all knds of "options" ;-)

No wonder he did, he is The God after all :)

This look at the Greek mythology is so different from any i've seen in the past. I like how you took the political situation and it fits right in. If you haven't said that thing about the clock many would have no clue about it, including me. It's like a caricature with a serious approach and execution.
Cheers!

Thanks a lot for your thoughts on this... yes, I felt the need to add some explanation, as some of this would really not make much sense without..

Yep, especially the clock can be viewed as a symbol of so many things, with broken hands... Even more, interpretations are possible.
I like how you and Peter Gric have a completely different approach when it comes to an explanation of his work. As your styles.
He lets the people think what they want while they observe his art. He does not show what is his viewing point while on the work he is showing and it's totaly free for interpretation.
You, on the other hand, tend to explain what you mean by your art, leaving no window for doubt on your purpose and the meaning you put on the glass. I really like both of your approaches.
I am wondering how to approach this subject... i was thinking a lot about that and still having no clue about it, maybe i should do it when i feel that there is a need of explanation.

Explanations are a tricky thing and I only add it, when an element has a distinct meaning and I added it with a purpose. Quite often I leave things open to everyone's own interpretation, as I think that is an important part of the artwork.. the way it is perceived.

Just follow your feeling. If you think its necessary for understanding something, do it :-)

It's tricky indeed. I always try to make it as understandable as possible. Maybe i underestimate the people... I don't know. Thank you!
