"Water" was the given theme for a group show in France a couple of years ago. For that I created the painting "The Source" in my special Hinterglas technique, combining elements I associate with water, as well as beauty. Life is the most beautiful miracle to me and they say, there is no life without water.
I was very much into strange creatures at the time and so it was clear, that one of those had to be in the painting. I usually draw all the elements on paper first, like this mechanical lobster:
The next step is to make the pencil drawing on glass and to have that sit on a gray surface helps with adding a few first highlights
Next I airbrushed in an even layer of a blue-ish tone in acrylics and erased the lighter areas
Now adding highlights to the stream of water coming from a glass bowl. Those to elements were the most challenging to accomplish in this technique.
At the same time, I added a first layer of watercolor
Slowly more and more colors are added
Here a detail of the roses, as a symbol of beauty
After many more layers of different colors, it finally looks like this

Wow, I love your work. It is reminicant of the art nouveau genre combined with steam punk. The bowl looks so realistic it is like popping out of the page. The roses are very well done, incredible detail. Lobster on top brave choice. Thanks for your post.

Highlights so crisp, you could get a tan.
I love your airbrush and painting technique. The subtle shadows draw me in, in addition to your linework and color choices.
I'd love to see what you could do with a game engine and a whole year to produce textured meshes.
The result would be fantastic, just like your paintings.

You have such a way with words, even a comment from you is a work of art. Feeling almost embarrassed to answer in my crude way.. the thing I don't understand is the game engine and textured meshes. Maybe you could point me in the right direction?

I will say that it is a deep subject that may distract you from your other pursuits, but here's some stuff that you may find useful/interesting:
Unreal 4 Game Engine:
https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/what-is-unreal-engine-4
(There are others, but this one allows you to work with it for free until you decide to do anything commercial, then its a small percentage. It also looks the best across many different styles and aesthetics.)
Mesh Creation Tools:
Maya/Autodesk (Pricey, but excellent - 30day Trial) https://www.autodesk.com/products/maya/overview
Blender (Free, but obfuscating menu design is distracting to some) - https://www.blender.org/
Procedural Texturing Tools - Allegorithmic "Substance" Tool Suite - https://www.allegorithmic.com/
(The textures can be produced from photo/scan inputs as well - very powerful toolset.)
I'd love to see you do something with these, if you have some time to invest.
Feel free to ask any questions, I'd be happy to answer or at least point you to someone who can.

I see, thanks for the explanation and the links. Phew... don't think I can put any more on my plate anytime soon..
I have done a few simple things with blender, like my steampunk dragon, but these things are rather crude and simple, as I "render" the old fashioned way..

Then I say grab Unreal 4 and Substance Painter to give it a go. You have decent models to work with already.
I realize it takes out time from things, but it could open other avenues you haven't explored.

Stunning.
I love portraiture myself and as such admire the face when it has been rendered well.

Another amazing masterpiece. And i LOVE the grin on a lobsters face :) When i try to imagine how much work goes into each of your drawings i wonder, where did you get that patience? On a sub maybe? :)

Glad you like my lobster. Getting that perfect grin was actually not so easy... not sure if you gain much patience on a sub. If anything, I think you might get an idea of how a zombie might feel π

I am sure it was not. I have actually have found time to watch Das Boot during the last few days. Just thought spending so much time with nothing much to do kind of develops that trait to occupy yourself with some work to burn that time that requires a lot of detail, so that time will pass faster :)

Master, it's the most beautiful thing I've seen in many days.
It is a very beautiful technique and the mastery you have is simply fascinating.
I think I have to try and make an attempt. I'm really amazed with your creations.
Painting from front to back is one of the biggest challenges I've come across.
Previously I made grisaille for stained glass, but baking does not make it so practical.
Surely I will not say anything that you do not already know. But you inspire me and make me think of alternatives and possibilities.
Thanks for sharing.
from the heart

Thanks a lot! Master is a big title and I don't think I have earned it quite yet. Every painting is still a learning experience. Would you mind sharing the link to your glass work over at discord for some art-discussion?

Hello @reinhard-schmid you really did a great job, a pray I could afford oil paint and acrylic to make my paintings more lively too.

Thank you very much. Nice work on your blog. Its not necessarily the kind of paint you use, but what you make of it. Sometimes vibrancy comes with higher contrast. You can create light in a painting only by adding darkness... for that, even a pencil is enough ;-)

More beautiful, luminous work.
When these paintings look like they're glowing (as in the last picture) is it because they're lit from behind, with light shining through the glass?
Lobsters look mechanical anyway, so a robotic one doesn't seem far-fetched. Those creepy teeth, though - that is unsettling.
