"The Hotel Lobby Manifesto" by Richard F. Yates

in art •  6 years ago

I wrote this in one "take," an INK FREESTYLE, just sliding words off the top of my head onto a piece of recycled cardboard. (Then I took a picture of the piece and colored it with my phone.) I'm pleased enough with the results...

"I like to pretend that there's order under the chaos---or chaos under the order. I'm actually not even sure which of those is true anymore. It (the STUFF) just comes out. I assume at least some of it is intentional---but it's not important to me if it makes sense anymore. Half-formed ideas... (Like that one...) Fragments. Brain collage. Makes me wonder, at times, why I do this---writing and drawing and such---when I don't have some big MESSAGE that I'm trying to share. I have a massive, nonsensical URGE to create, but I usually have no plan, no fixed goal, no PRODUCT in mind when I start spreading ink on the page. I like compiling words. If they make sense later---that's cool. If they DON'T make sense, but they're funny or weird, that's cool, too. It's the URGE to create that's most important. The MAKING. The DOING. The destination isn't as crucial as the journey itself. So is that chaos that looks like order---or order disguised as chaos? (9 MAR 2019)
