It´s been just two years today since I did this.
I live in Ibiza and don´t really go for the nightlife side of it.
I had a friend who very sadly passed away last year in Spring Robert Miles, he was quite a well known DJ and lived here in Ibiza. (had a very famous track that made it in the 90s called Children). I wasn´t into his deejaying but he had a great taste for music beyond the techno, and above all a very special person.
He was running a radio station that was part of a much larger project called Openlab where he wanted to create collaborations between artist of many disciplines. He always believed in my work and was very kind to promote me.
Anyway, he organised a summer of special nights in a club named Heart and wanted artists he promoted to paint live while DJ´s or bands would play that he also produced.
When ha asked me to do this, at first I said this was really not my thing, I couldn´t picture myself doing this for 4 hours in a night club with super loud techno.
He convinced me. It was very well payed and I needed the money to travel so I did put myself through the experience.
In reality it was good, very worth it for one´s collection of diverse experiences.
Here is a text I wrote to Robert to explain what went on while I painted that piece.
There is always a time while
painting and going with the flow of the shapes that come through from the first
phase, that I try to undestand may be one of the possible messages from the
subconscious. In this case as I was painting I kept seeing water and as I was
conditioned by the place and situation I was in I asked myself what whould I
like to communicate with my painting. I then thought I would love to show
people to have great respect and gratitude to the spring water we have left in
Ibiza and that is now so scarce. To have all our visitors respect the water and
not waste it. I then saw holes in the water, and the kind of plant going
through the center of the painting was searching for water and kept finding its
holes. This plant then developed its
blossom as small water deposits to help it though the droughts.
This painting is called “The holes in the
water”
Here are some photos from the evening, by Salim Lamrani
This is how the painting ended up being.. just 4 hours of work. It was white canvas when I started.
A few pics of the surroundings.
And... Roberto... he left too soon! This is how I remember him, Great pic by his friend Salim Lambrani.
Best Wishes

I have great respect for your work....especially if you are someone who does not go to the nightclubs and does not like this loud music either....
....I myself am normal from March April to October on the island.....I know Ibiza very well....even if people say Ibiza has changed a lot it always has the charm of Ibiza it once was....your work is the best proof of that😉👍
Ibiza still has its soft and loud sounds

I, too, am not much on techno music and brava to you for doing this. I would think it a hard place to create, yet I suppose once we are in the groove of our artist mind, it can matter little what is going on around us.
Being a bit of a hermit and loving a good hideaway to create, this is the exact opposite of that so it would be interesting to see what is made. I know when I spend time in the city my sketchbooks often have a different feel than when I am sequestered in the country as I am in the Summer months.
I am sorry you lost your friend, but it sounds you have lovely memories of him to carry with you and that is how we live on: though the memories and love of others :)

I don´t think it´s something I would like to do regularily, AT ALL! but if you get the chance sometime, its a good exercise of attention and focus. I was able to create a focus and this helped me so much. Thank you for your warm words again Donna! Thank you!

Beautiful post, @romanie ! The painting is amazing and full with vivacity and yet it invokes a sense of depth, as if I am sinking into a deep pool of green water, and looking up, I see your painting.... with its strong currents and the holes in the water! Wonderful feeling :>
And I love the text accompanying and introducing this post. You made your posts very personal and very accessible <3 It seems like it was quite a night of live painting in a crowded, loud space! I can't imagine the sensation but the photos are very interesting :>
Also, condolences for the passing of your friend. He looks like he was a beautiful soul.

Thank you Veryspider, thank you for describing your impression, it was a weird space to be in to create, my body was literally vibrating with the beat of the music, not out of pleasure but out of the loudness, quite bizzare. Thank you for your condolences, he was a very special soul.

great post, Romanie!
One thing I cannot do is live painting - I freak out when someone is watching me, because I screw up more often than not, and I don't want anyone to see me fail. Reason for the screw-ups are that I never do "set pieces": everything I do has to be a experiment, and sometimes, when you do experiments, they fail (at least painting is not as dangerous as fooling around with a chemistry set and blowing up your parents house, haha).

Otto... I think you should try it one day, just for the heck of it! You are a very extroverted person, I think you would do fine! Your art is very organic, I´m sure there are no mistakes you can´t turn into anything else! ;-)

that's probably true - so far, I never threw anything out, always was able to do something with it. But it is not a "slick" process. There were times when I cut up a canvas to take out that which was good.
