Tolkein gave us the ancient tree men called Ents.
These sculptures from Mauritius make pretty good tree men of all different shapes and sizes.
Instead of hoping for a branch to use as an arm it seems easiest to simply put the hand to the mouth.
A multitude of expressions are employed and its amazing that such simply carved would can be made to be so expressionate.
