New Painting - Coronet Peak, New Zealand - Painted Outdoors - Art and Photography

in art •  7 years ago

I have been painting outdoors (en plein air) today, enjoying the spring weather here in New Zealand. Today I was driving around near to where I live and found this great view of Coronet Peak from the side of the road. I got out my pochade box easel and got to work painting the view.

Coronet Peak, New Zealand, 8" x 10", oil on canvas painted en plein air.

This was the view I painted from the side of the road. The mountain is Coronet Peak which is a ski resort about a 15 minute drive from Queenstown. The ski season has just ended but there is still some snow at the top of the mountain.

I really liked the trees in this view so I changed the composition to add them with Coronet Peak in the background.

Here are a couple of the painting process photos. I have been painting on canvas panels which I made myself by adhering canvas to marine plywood. I prepared the canvas with a layer of burnt umber before painting.

My pochade box set up at the side of the road, some of the best accessible views are from the side of the road.

I always start a plein air painting with the sky first, then I get my shadows in as quickly as I can. Once I have painted all the shadows it doesn't matter if the light changes.

This is my finished painting with the view in the background.

Wow! You really painted that. You're a natural! Astounding scenary, my friend. If only I could draw half as good as you, I'd let my imagination run wild with creativity. Alas, words are my only tool of choice.
