I painted this art work outdoors a few days ago. Painting outside is known as painting en plein air. The area is in the Bay of Islands in Northland, New Zealand. I just love painting outdoors in this area, it is so beautiful.
The View I Painted
The Painting Process
I sketch out the composition with burnt sienna. I am using oil paints.
I paint my dark values first so I can establish a tonal dynamic in the my painting. It then makes it easier to paint the areas in light.
Painting the background, sky, clouds and hills.
Adding more details, trees, fields and grass.
My Finished Painting
Rolling Hills, Northland, 8" x 10", oil on linen panel.
