Touch of Change

Hello everyone! As promised I would do another big post with new art. Well I finished my pencil drawing today with the title "Touch of Change". I told there was a lot going on lately and I really had problems drawing digitally as I just got stuck with no drive. So I decided to work with pencils again as it feels a bit closer to how I feel and easier to flow into my inner world. I always find it difficult when lots of things change or when I try to change. Being in a comfort zone is nice and warm but that way you don't develop or improve. So I decided to draw off the feelings I had about all the changes.

It is made on A4 sized Canson paper with pencils. I use Koh-I-Noor Hardtmuth pencils ranged from B to 6B. I always start with B pencil for setting up the lines and start with 2B for shading.

The process

In this blog I will try to explain a bit how I work. Everything I learned is autodidact and I never went to art school I even dropped drawing classes because back then I thought it was something I wouldn't use when I grow up.....But I used to draw a lot to get trough all the boring classes.

I started a few weeks ago and wanted to create a focus point so it wouldn't end up chaotic.

Here you see that I started with the main creature. I already had a title in mind so I needed some kind of methaphor creature that resembles change and trying to touch the main creature.

shot2.jpg

I created a situation where the main creature is looking at the creature that tries to enter his personal space.

shot3.jpg

Seems like the creature got company and also talks with consumption so some drops of spit flying around.

Somehow something happened to his stomach and a creature is coming from his insides. Didn't really plan doing that but a lot of what I draw comes from my subconscious mind and thinking about it made sense. I mean I felt a lot of stress in my stomach so I guess my drawing is telling me what's going on. But it isn't the first time creatures have stomachs opening up. ;)

The creature on his hand I'm not sure what it resembles yet but I really liked it. :)

shot4.jpg

I went on drawing and adding creatures and lines to balance it out and because I love transforming lines into creatures with some personality. Also starting to shade to create depth.

shot5.jpg

Adding more contrast to the drawing and make lines sharper and darker. Eventually I erase lines that I don't need anymore.

Extra paper

If you work with pencils it's important to have a paper between the drawing hand and the paper you draw on. That way you can lean on the paper with your hand and have more control while drawing. If you don't do it the drawing will get messy and you keep re-shading.

Creating smooth gradients

To create smooth gradients I use a "Tortillon". You can also use a paper towel, toilet paper or a cotton wool bud. Never use your hands/fingers for blending as it will get greasy.

I use a sandpaper to sharpen the tortillon (don't use a sharpener) so I can get smooth results. Below you can see a picture of me using a tortillon for creating a smooth shade.

shot7.jpg

After blending you can add more contrast with darker pencils to make a beautiful gradient. In the picture below you can see it's almost finished but still missing shades. I also like creating extra shapes while blending and shading to make it more dynamic.

Finished artwork

Eventually the drawing is finished and I started to scan it. After that I have to tweak a bit to let it look like the original drawing as the scanner makes the drawing to light. I often use the image > mode > levels option in Photoshop which is great for grayscale artworks.

Well that was about it. I really hope you liked the post and seeing my workflow. I learned a lot by just drawing and also by collaborating with other pencil artists.

Thank you so much!

I bet it took you a while to create that picture, a lot of little creatures and I like they all have different expressions of their faces, different emotions.

I can understand what you mean with using another paper to protect the drawing as accidentally you may smudge your drawing, actually I try to do my drawing from top to bottom to prevent it but it is not always fits and you need to do something on the sides or center first.
Was interesting to learn that you also using blending stick to make surface smooth. Wonderful result and really funny, especially one in center :)

Thank you very much @stef1! Yeah don't know how many hours but it took me some days of hard work.

I think you should try using the paper. For me it's impossible to plan the artwork from top to center as I go all over the place :)

It was something I learned after some years of working with pencils and I liked the smooth results it gives.

Thank you! :D

Thank you for sharing and congrats on the well deserved Curie! I guess the guy that is coming out of the stomach is a glimpse of happiness? ;) awesome detailed work!

Thank you @patschwork I'm really happy with it took me a while to create it. Could be or maybe a new version of the anxious one :)

great job :D i like the faces hahaha are funny.

Thank you glad you like it @owl-digital! :)

Creppy and cute at the same time, like this<3

Thank you @nanosesame!

Love this, Sander :) The change seems like it's contaminating throughout your faces by touch/contact :D A wonderful composition and I love the step by step you've included here !

Congrats for curie, as well <3

Thank you very much @veryspider!

If it would be a female monster I would think she was giving a birth, lol (You never know how monsters give birth - babies might come out of their stomach!)

I'm surprised you haven't studied art. You are naturally very talented then. Your creatures are always so adorable and I like that you stick with them. They are always a bit different but it's still them :)

Yay to the curie vote!! I'm so happy to finally see some recognition! You deserve it so much!

Well maybe male monsters can give birth too lol I never asked :D But yes it could be a birth of a new and changed baby monster.

That's really kind well I tried long time ago but didn't get accepted back then. But I didn't have a good portfolio when I tried. Really kind of you to say I did spend a lot of free time on drawing and hope someday I could draw everyday and don't need a dayjob to pay bills. But it's difficult to get my art sold somehow...

Hahaha, you are right! Monsters can do anything!

I can imagine it's difficult because your art is very special and people might find it hard to imagine how it will look like hanging in their room. Maybe you should think about creating some virtual room set up and placing your art work there for people to see how it looks like in a certain space? Just a suggestion :)

Your pencils drawing also look great. The explanation of your art was very helpful. Just by looking at your art, it seems represented your emotion right now. Art is the best medium to express our feeling. It not easy to draw the little creatures in different emotions. Some looks scary, some looks cute :) I love coloring and also self learnt. When we love something, I believe we can just learn it our own and continuously improved by practicing. Thank you for sharing your art @sanderjansenart. My next goal would be learn to sketch by using color pencil after saw your art work. It really motivate me.

Thank you for your kind words! Yes for me it's the best way to draw and release what I feel into a drawing. That way I can also let it go because it's somehow contained in the artwork.

I think you are right if you have the drive and you love what you do you will get there eventually. I tried colored pencils a couple of times but didn't really get into the workflow (probably no patience). Happy to hear you got motivated and hope you still are. Just give it time and don't rush so you can make beautiful things.

This is an awesome post, Sander. I am really glad that you put a lot of thoughts about how you created your marvelous and quirky creatures, because sometimes I wonder what's going on in that head of yours and now I managed to get a small glimpse of it XD.

I hope you will keep drawing in paper from time to time, even if it's a more arduous process. Congratulations on your curie vote ^_^.

Thank you so much @scrawly for the kind words and support! Haha yes maybe a glimpse but even I don't understand what's all going on in my head lol.

I will sometimes when I get stuck or tired in digital medium, also got a few pencil drawings to finish ;)

Thank you!

It always amazes me how the picture transforms with the shading and contouring.

Thank you! :)

Choice work! I'm sure so many of us can relate to the portrayal of the picture. 🙂

Thank you very much! Nice to hear others can relate :)

Aaawwww.. your art is so adorably creepy. I love the shading and thank you so much for sharing the process and the tip on creating smooth gradients was really helpful. I am one who sometimes uses fingers. Won't do that again :)

Glad I could give some tips on drawing. I did with fingers in the beginning too but learned how smudgy it gets and using cotton wool buds worked much better. Eventually bought tortillons which aren't expensive and in all different sizes. Really an improvement for controlling and all sizes of blending tiny or big surfaces. :)

Yaaa it goes all smudgy on me too, especially if you have sweaty palms or accidentally touched water. But I always have to remember not to touch the sides of my palm on the drawing coz that part goes smudgy too. I’ll go look for tortillons in one of the art shops here. Happy weekend there @sanderjansenart!

That backstory though... How the heck did he slip into his stomach? 😅 and now he wanna tear it and come out? Lol!

I like how you went over the process, it makes it much more easier for people starting out...

There is a whole lot of creepiness going on there but it also looks funny. I guess the fun sort of outweighs the creepiness.

The drawing turned our to be beautiful and also clean. You are great with drawing, it's surprising to hear that you didn't study arts.

Hahaha not sure I want to know how he did slip in lol...

Thank you very much for all the kindness! Didn't study art but I hope I can do it as a dayjob someday :)

😀😀 I really do wanna know...

Sure! With what you put out now, I am sure you can...

Hope so but for now with barely selling anything or low rewards on posts I would starve to death ;)

I am sure it will work out someday, just keep making those awesome art....
