This post is the results of a creative exercise based on the night sky. We've been having great weather here in Kodaikanal. We're at the start of summer but we've been keeping cool with light intermittent rain. The clouds have been making some amazing patterns as they dance across the sky. While heading down for dinner today, I happened to look up at the sky and was awestruck by what I saw. These days you don't need a DSLR to do night photography as a lot of smartphones come equipped with a manual photography mode that allowed me to precariously balance my phone against objects, keep the shutter open and capture the sky even though it was dark. The surreal patterns made me want to explore what could be done with some creative editing. Does anyone remember that song by the Alan Parsons Project that speaks of the eye in the sky? Some of my edits look liked irises so I thought I'd explore that theme and try creating some sky eyes.
These were the unedited photographs I took of the night sky. The colours look different because of different ISO and shutter speed settings.
I put these pictures through Mirror Lab and combined them with eyes that are used as a clipping mask on photographs I'd taken previously of clouds during the day.
I then explored what I could create with those sky eyes.
Apart from the sky eyes, I got a lot of great results from using Mirror Lab on the photographs. The nice thing about the app is that it lets anyone be creative on the go. Here are some of those images I made while waiting for dinner.
I've recently learnt about how to use creative common licenses on steemit and would like to make all the images in this post available under a CC-Share Alike license. This means anyone is free to use, distribute or modify all the images in this post, but any derivative work will also hold the same license. It's a beautiful way to promote collaboration and I'd be stoked to see the results if any talented artists here want to reuse these images in their art.
Thank you! Yes, sometimes we get so caught up in the four walls surrounding us, we forget about all the beauty right above us. I'll remember to smile and look up more often too.
Ooh... Night sky and Mirror Lab. Looks great, now I want to see what this Mirror Lab thing is. But perhaps I should just try and stick to doing the 300 things I am doing already before taking on something new!
I was going through soom photos, organizing them a little so it becomes easier and faster to find what is related to what I want to write about (life seems to be about steemit these days... a lot!) and I thought of you with this one here, I don't have the commons license but please feel free to use it as you wish, I give you this photo:
It's actually not that complicated to use. You can get it for your smartphone and dabble with it whenever you're free. Most of my art takes absurdly long, but Mirror Lab is quick, easy and addictive. I'm not paid to advertise them, haha. It's just a solid app.
Curious to know the story behind that awesome picture. Do they actually have tortoises crossing? Thanks for dropping by and sending some graphic love.
Not paid hu? Just kiddin, I will check out the app...I forget everything is applications now, I had assumed it was some program on the computer!
Yea they have those crossings in Florida. We were there just visiting a friend and on this one strip was these signs. You're welcome, I mean that just happens now, when I see a turtle I think @soulturtle! Talking to one of your friends on my blog now... @manouche!
Yeah, technology is pretty impressive these days. You can do so many things with a few swipes on a phone.
Haha, It's kind of the same with coconuts. I've encountered surprisingly few coconuts here. They're ever present in chutneys but I haven't seen a lot of the coconut vendors. I'll send you cool coconut pictures too!
That's nice that you guys met. I love how steemit is basically one big happy family right now.
Yeah so cool!!! I just told my wife anout you and how next time we're in town or near there, somewhere in Tamil Nadu we'll go and meet @soulturtle and @manouche! Big family alright! If you do ever come to New York, don't forget about me... i'll show you around and even have a a place for you to stay in the coty and on our property!
Perhaps I should come up with a Coconut logo for myself.... your pictures will be welcome!
Gosh that second mirror lab photo is mesmerising. I know which song of the Parsons Project you are talking about! (Can't place the name though. It used to be on Abhi's iPod.) I love how all of your artwork originates from deep meaning and inspiration. It's something really special and makes for the best night time reads.
Thanks, yo! The song is not surprisingly called Eye in the Sky. It's the only song I've really heard by them. Yeah, Abhi would have had it. All of us had the same music and movies through the power of sharing. I think the meaning is only as deep as the viewer interprets it. That means you're a smart cookie for finding any meaning in my art. It's nice you think so though. Glad to provide some reading material. I really like how you describe your art too!
Wonderfull...

Yeah, for sure. I'd love to someday go homestead hopping and visit all the places I read about.
My gallery is surprisingly sparse of coconuts, but I'll keep a lookout.

Lol. Thanks.
What's the song called, though? I want to listen to it now but I just can't find it and Abhi can't seem to get it from my explanation :P

I'm listening to it after ages too, and it isn't really what I thought it was about.
