This is me working on a large painting commission.
I am representing the mythical story of the handsome Endymion who lived with his flock on Mount Latmos. One calm, clear night Diana, the moon, looking down to Earth saw him sleeping.
The cold heart of the virgin goddess was warmed by his surpassing beauty, so she came down to him, kissed him, and watched over him while he was sleeping.
Another story was that Jupiter bestowed on him the gift of perpetual youth united with perpetual sleep. Diana, it was said, took care of his flocks because they should not suffer by his inactive life, she also made his animals increase in number, and guarded his sheep and lambs from the wild beasts.
The story of Endymion has a particuliar charm because it slightly veils a human condition. We see in him the young artist, his fantasy and his heart seeking in vain what cannot satisfy him, finding his favorite hour in the quiet moonlight, lying down beneath the beams of the bright and silent Diana in the melancholy and the ardor which consumes him. The story suggests aspiring and poetic love, a life spent more in dreams than in reality.
